Field Trip tomorrow

Our exciting field trip aboard the Duck is tomorrow. Please dress in full uniform and bring a sack lunch. Today in 3rd grade math we worked on the math standard of elapsed time. In writing we learned about the poetic devices of rhyme and stanzas. We were also paired up to work on our own lyrical rhyme poem that will include a rhyming pattern and at least two stanzas. These will be due at the end of class on Monday. In religion we had prayer testing. In social studies Mrs. Combs introduced our project for the unit on Seattle. We will work with partners to create an ABC Book on Seattle and it's history. These will be due next Friday and we will work on them in class next week. Music was cancelled today due preparations for the first (and earliest) performance of the school musical Guys and Dolls. Remember to bring school supplies for the last day of the YWCA School supply drive.

Wednesday, May 16th

Thank you to those who donated to the Ballard Food bank and the YWCA supply drive. Today in 3rd grade math we had a checkpoint on rounding and completed another timed math facts test. In computers we continued to work on our keyboarding skills. Some of you are really showing progress! We ended the day with a preview of the school musical Guys and Dolls. Remember the YWCA supply drive ends on Friday, so please bring those supplies!

Tuesday, May 15th

Today we struggled with being good listeners. Hopefully we can work together and do better tomorrow. In 3rd grade math we worked with fractions on a number line. Today we also started the Safe Environment program Talk about Touching. We reviewed walking safety, gun safety and fire safety. We will continue this program throughout the month. In reading we reviewed the reading strategy Skip the Word, Ten Come back and piggy-backed a new strategy called Trade a Word. In writing we reviewed similes and metaphors and how they are present in so many lyrics of songs. In social studies we had our quiz on China and watched a video on Seattle. We also made a KWL chart (What I Know- What I want to Know- and What I Learned chart) about Seattle. Remember tomorrow is a school Mass day. Please come in full uniform and with a food donation. We are also in need of donations for the YWCA Supply drive.

Monday, May 14th

I hope everyone had a wonderful weekend and showered their moms with love! Today in 3rd grade math we continued to work on fraction concepts, including equivalent fractions and comparing fractions. In writing we began working on figurative language such as metaphors and similes. We will work more with these in our next style of poetry: Lyrics. In reading we studied a new reading strategy: Skip the Word, Then Come Back. In religion we continued working on our Sacrament wheels (due tomorrow). In Social Studies each student made three questions they would put on a quiz of China (look for your question on the quiz tomorrow). I also introduced our next unit for Social Studies (Seattle), by reading the book Larry Get's Lost in Seattle. This was a good warm-up for what we will see on our field trip aboard the Duck. Remember to bring more school supplies for the YWCA supply drive!

Today in 3rd grade math we learned about equivalent fractions and had a check point on our multiplication math facts. In Religion we had our weekly prayer testing and worked on our sacrament wheels that are due on Monday (point sheet and example attached). In reading we practiced using the reading strategy Make Pictures or Mental Images the picture book Elbert's Bad Word. Please remember to send in the field trip form by tomorrow. I will announce the drivers tomorrow as well.

Tuesday, May 8th

Going home today are the field trip forms for our next field trip on Friday, May 18th. Please return them ASAP. The YWCA supplies drive started this week. The homeroom to collect the most supplies, earns a free dress day! 3rd graders need to bring: Plastic clip-boards and erasers. 4th graders need to bring: Pencil pouches and 1 -1/2 3-ring binders. In reading today we discussed the strategy of visualizing while reading and how personal this can be. In Social Studies today everyone presented their China brochures, while the "audience" took notes on other facts they learned. Remember, tomorrow is a Mass day. Please remember to dress in full uniform and bring food for the Ballard food bank.

Happy Monday! I hope everyone was able to get out and enjoy the sunshine yesterday. Sunny days make even harder to concentrate on schoolwork, but our class did great today. In 3rd grade math we started math with a checkpoint on division with remainders. Then we worked on creating division word problems. In writing we began working on acrostic poems. In Social Studies we finished up working on our China brochures and practiced our presentations. Remember, presentations are tomorrow!

Good afternoon! We had a very productive day today. In 3rd grade math we worked hard on organizing and tracking our standards folders. In writing we continued to work on our haiku poems in our poetry books. In religion we had a Steps to Respect quiz and were tested on our prayers. In reading we updated our good fit book bags and created main idea stars on the books we are currently reading. After lunch we went to art and music. CELEBRATION OF LEARNING is tonight from 6:30-7:30. This is completely student led and they will show you all of their hard work and progress so far this quarter. I hope you can all make it sometime during that hour.

Remember tomorrow night is Celebration of Learning! Today in 3rd grade math we had our timed tests, received our fraction vocabulary checkpoints and logged our progress. We can't wait to show our guests our standards folders tomorrow. In computers we worked with our partners on our China brochures. At the end of the day today we worked hard getting our desks and the room ready for tomorrow night.

Happy May day! Today in 3rd grade math we introduced dividing with remainders. In Steps to Respect we worked what it means to be assertive and role played situations when that would be necessary. In writing we defined what a Haiku poem is and started working on one of our own. In reading we had a quiz on the strategy Determine and Analyze Author's Purpose and Support with Text. After lunch we read a chapter from our read-aloud book and continued working in partners on our China brochures. Remember tomorrow is a Mass day! It's the last day of April and we have been busy! In 3rd grade math we reviewed the rules when dividing with 0's and 1's. In writing we worked with partners discovering some our favorite poems. In reading we reviewed the reading strategy: Determine and Analyze Author's Purpose and Support with Text. We will have a quiz on this tomorrow. In Social Studies we went over the China brochure point sheet. We also worked with our partners to compile and organize our facts and generate ideas on how our brochures will look. Free Dress tomorrow!

Tuesday, April 24th

Today in 3rd grade math we worked on the Associative (grouping) Property of Multiplication and our math facts. In Religion we reviewed for the chapter 27 (Easter) test that is tomorrow. In writing we continued to work on our pen-pal letters, while I conferred with others. In reading we had our quiz on the vocabulary involved in a comprehension reading strategy. This afternoon we had a discussion about the many themes that were in the last read-aloud book The Year the Swallows Came Early. We ended the day reading two chapters in our new read-aloud book Yang the Youngest and His Terrible Ear. Remember, there is no Mass tomorrow!

Happy Monday everyone! I hope you all had a great weekend and we're able to get out and enjoy the beautiful sunshine. Today in 3rd grade math we continued working on fractions. We also had a quiz on addition properties- adding three, three-digit numbers. In writing we went over the rubric for the next pen-pal letter. This is attached below. We worked on our rough draft letters and some students met with me to confer. In reading we reviewed how to properly log our reading stamina. This was continue to be nightly homework for the rest of the year so we can track our progress in reading stamina. We also reviewed the vocabulary involved in the reading strategy Use Main Idea and Supporting Details to Determine Importance. These words include: Main idea, supporting details, topic and theme. There will be a quiz on these tomorrow. In Social Studies we read about the land of China and continued watching the Discovery Atlas video series on China. We ended the period reading the next chapter in our read aloud.

Field Trip tomorrow!

Remember tomorrow is our exciting field trip to the International District and the Wing Luke Museum. Please dress in full uniform and it might be a good idea to bring a light jacket in case of rain. In 3rd grade math today we started working on fractions (halves, thirds, fourths, etc.) In writing we created a rubric for our pen pal letters. In reading we read aloud the book Cloudette and applied the strategy: Use Main Idea and Supporting Details to Determine Importance. Don't forget, we do have a spelling test tomorrow.

Tuesday, April 17th

Today in third grade math we continued to work in groups on division and multiplication. In writing we received our newest pen-pal letters and started planning for our response letters. Today we also finished our read-aloud book, The Year the Swallows Came Early. We will be discussing this novel further next week. In Social Studies we started looking at the geography of China and the natural barriers that surround it. Remember tomorrow is a Mass day, so please come in full uniform and bring food for the food bank.

Welcome Back!

I hope everyone had a joyous Easter and a great Spring break. Today in 3rd grade math we worked in math groups. Group A worked on using multiplication to compare. Group B worked on dividing with 6 and 7. Group C worked on new math standard choices. In writing we worked on our writing stamina with a prompt on how we spent our Spring break. In reading we discussed a new reading strategy: Use Main Idea and Support Details to Determine Importance. In Social Studies we had a pre-test on what we know about China. We then prepared our China folders and watched a You Tube video on the history and importance of China. Remember, Friday is our field trip to the Wing Luke museum and the International District. Remember to bring in those field trip forms. Also, there will be a spelling test on Friday.

Holy Thursday

Today our class reviewed the importance of Holy Thursday. During religion we had our own breaking of bread and time of reverence. In 3rd grade math we continued to work on division and multiplication. In writing we shared our All About books with the 2nd grade class and each other. What fabulous work everyone did! Today report cards and math progress reports are coming home. Please remember to sign and return the empty report card envelope.

Wednesday, April 4th

We started our day off with an all school Mass presented by Mrs. Gillmore's class. In Reading, we had a short Daily 5 time to work on writing or other Daily 5 options. In 3rd grade math we worked on timed basic math tests and tested for our watermelon and fish facts. In computers we completed a keyboarding lesson and then used the last part of class to print our any other images we needed for our All About books. A field trip form is going home today and should be completed and returned ASAP. Also, science test are going home and should be signed and returned tomorrow.

Today was a very productive day! In 3rd grade math we worked on the relating multiplication and division. We also tested on our multiplication facts. In writing we continued working on our All About Informational books. Remember these are due this Thursday! Today I introduced to the class our Social Studies unit: China. We made an "I" chart: What I know and What I want to know about China. We then had a discussion of what we might be learning about on our field trip (April 20th) to the Wing Luke museum. I then read-aloud the book Baseball Saved Us. In reading level assessing has started again. Remember tomorrow is an all school Mass day. Please remember to bring food for the Ballard food bank. We are also in need of kleenex for the classroom.
