3/4 Homework Video #2

This assignment is due by Friday, December 16th AT THE LATEST. You may turn it in anytime before then. Your assignment is to watch the video and write 1 paragraph on how you have the ability to help others. The video shows a speech given by Kirk Cousins, the quarterback from Michigan State University, the college I graduated from. He discusses how college athletes are privileged to be in the position they are in, and they often feel entitled and they use that power for personal gain instead of helping others. He feels they should use that power in a more responsible manner.

In your paper, explain how you can help others by using the advantages you have been given. BE SPECIFIC.

Here are some vocabulary words that you can use in your paper.
PRIVILEGE: a right, immunity, or benefit enjoyed only by a person beyond the advantages of most

SELF-ENTITLEMENT: an individual believes he is entitled to have whatever he wants when he wants it, without regard to what is fair or reasonable to others

RESPONSIBILITY: using your ability to take care of others, honest, trustworthy, reliable, capable

Your assignment is to watch the video and write a 1/2 page paper on the topic of PRIVILEGE, ENTITLEMENT, and RESPONSIBILITY. The video shows a speech given by Kirk Cousins, the quarterback from Michigan State University, my alma mater. He discusses how college athletes are privileged to be in the position they are in, and they often feel entitled and they use that power for personal gain instead of helping others. He feels they should use that power in a more responsible manner. In your paper, explain how you are privileged and how you intend to use that power in a responsible way to help others. You need to give specific examples, but they do not need to be related to your time in PE. You can write about how you are privileged because of your family, financial security, athletic ability, religious affiliation, the benefits you enjoy because of your neighborhood or country and then explain how you will use these privileges responsibly. BE SPECIFIC.

Congrats to all of the students for giving 100% effort. We'll be running again in May and our goal is to work hard over the next couple of months, improve our conditioning, and have our times be faster when we run again. Also, we'll be inviting all of the OLF faculty to run with us because exercise and improving our fitness is a life-long process and important for everybody.

PE Survey Results

Here are the results of the PE survey that all students grades 3 - 8 grade took last week. I've divided the students into three groups; 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8. The students' favorite PE activities, favorite out-of-school sports/activities, favorite beverages, amount of water and fruits/vegetables that students eat and drink, and percentage of students that turned in the survey are all included. There was a competition based on which individual class would have the highest percentage of returned surveys, and the winner is.......... 8th grade section 1, with 96% of the students turning in their homework. Congratulations 8th graders, we'll discuss what this means next week.

If you did not turn in you survey, still do so in order to get homework points.

Drinking water in order to stay hydrated is very important, especially when exercising, but there are many factors that impact how much water a child should drink in one day. Height, weight, intensity of exercise, and temperature all impact water intake. For our Fatima students, it is important to drink 35-70 ounces per day, which is roughly 3.5 - 7 glasses, depending on these factors.

2-4 servings of fruit and 3-5 servings of vegetables are recommended per day.

Introduction

Our Lady of Fatima Community,

My name is Shawn McCulloch. I’m excited to be the new Physical Education teacher at Our Lady of Fatima. Please allow me to tell you a little bit about myself. I grew up just outside of Detroit and attended Catholic school at Our Lady of the Lakes. I received degrees from Michigan State University and the University of Michigan. Along with my teaching certificate, I have a Master of Arts in Teaching and a special education endorsement. Before becoming a teacher, I was a social worker assisting adults with developmental disabilities at a vocational rehabilitation facility. Four years ago I decided to change careers and become a teacher. I was accepted into the Chicago Teaching Fellows program where I agreed to teach in a high-need school in downtown Chicago for three years. While teaching in Chicago, I gained valuable experience both in the classroom and in the gym. I was a classroom teacher, coached both boys and girls basketball and worked with students in an after-school fitness program. I’m excited to use my experience and teaching skills to create a fun and beneficial year for the students. I believe in maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper diet and exercise, and I look forward to passing these values on to the students of Our Lady of Fatima. If anybody has any questions or comments, feel free to contact me. I look forward to meeting everybody as the year progresses.

Sincerely,

Shawn McCulloch
