a. Reject or accept your hypothesis and explain why

b. Choose two out of the four questions below to answer using complete sentences and restating

· What do you think happens to flood waters when they reach another body of water like a lake? Where did you see that happen in your stream table?

·

· What might happen in a canyon when there is a flash flood?

·

· What might make water flowing through a stream channel slow down?

5th Math Problem Solving

The seagulls were following the Sea Wolf Ship, because Grace and Darcy had a good catch that morning. They counted their fish and after the fourth hour there were 40. In the third hour there were one half as many fish as in the fourth hour, and during the second hour there were half as many as they counted in the third hour. The first hour there were one half as many as in the second hour. How many fish did Grace and Darcy catch all together during the four hours? Write to help explain your best thinking using words, numbers, or pictures. Use your rubric for a 3!

Lauren used 15.6 feet of fabric to make a fabulous new dress. That’s 3 times the length of fabric she used for her new hat. How many feet of fabric did Lauren use for her hat? Write to help explain your best thinking using words, numbers, or pictures. Use your rubric to get a 3!

Vial Shake Test

Question: What will happen to the clay and sand in the earth material when it is shaken in a vial full of water?

Hypothesis: (fill in the blanks) During the shake test the clay will ___________ and the sand will ______________. I think this because ___________________________.

Materials:

Earth material

2 vials (1 big/1 small)

Water

2 Hand lenses

2 spoons

Procedure:

1. Assign a getter and get supplies

2. Use spoon to fill a Vial about half full with earth material from the stream table (2 vials per group)

3. Pour water into the vial until it is almost full

4. Put the cap on the vial, shake it for 5 seconds, set it on the table, and observe

5. Record what happens to the sand and clay in the results section of your lab report - 4 written observations and labeled picture

6. Clean up (dump earth material back into stream table before washing vial)

Results: include written response and labeled drawing

Conclusion:

1. Accept of reject your hypothesis using data from your shake test.

Ex: My hypothesis that the clay would dissolve in the water was partially correct. I know this because during our shake test the water turned a milky color showing that the clay and water mixed.

  1. List one thing that you learned and describe how it applies to a real-life stream table.

Ex: I learned .... This shows that in a real-life stream table ....

  1. Discuss possible errors that could have occurred in the collection of the data (experimental errors).

Ex: One thing that might have gone wrong in our experiment and changed our results was ....

End of the Quarter Celebration

To celebrate the end of the third quarter, our homeroom is celebrating by feeding others instead of ourselves. In the spirit of Lent, we decided to donate the money we would have spent on an end of the quarter celebration lunch to the Heifer International Program. The kids had the option to choose whether to donate a portion or all of their third quarter lunch fund to Heifer. In the end, they choose to give it all! So as we bring quarter 3 to an end, let us give thanks to the many blessings in our lives and pray for those around the world that are not as fortunate. Great job 5th/6th on the things you have accomplished individually this quarter and congratulations on the things you can accomplish when working together as a community! I am looking forward to everything you will achieve in the up coming 4th quarter!

After a vote we have chosen to donate a sheep and a flock of hope. Below you can read a little bit more about our donation choices:

Sheep

Sheep Entire communities depend on wool and meat from sheep. Struggling families use sheep's wool to make clothes, or sell it for extra income. Sheep often give birth to twins or triplets and can graze even the hilliest, rockiest pastures unsuitable for other livestock.

Some Heifer families use managed grazing techniques or zero-grazing pens to protect the environment and collect manure for fertilizer, which improves soil and pasture land.

Warm in winter, cool in summer, waterproof and durable - wool is a valuable product that struggling families can use for clothing or sell for extra income.

All over the world, Heifer partners are raising sheep to advance the cause against hunger and poverty. And, through the act of Pass on the Gift, they are also sharing training and animals with other families in need.

Flock of Hope

Your gift of a Flock of Hope will include chicks, ducklings and goslings that will grow up to lay precious eggs that mean hope and increasing health and prosperity for hungry families from the Philippines to Rwanda.

Eggs add vital protein to malnourished families' diets, and droppings provide a wonderful natural fertilizer to improve crop yields. Over time as the flocks grow, families can sell the surplus eggs and produce at market and use the extra income to send children to school, build secure housing and more! This gift is a great package of hope that can touch an entire village through Heifer's hallmark of Pass on the Gift.

March Science News

Landforms Unit

Our class is beginning a new science unit using the Foss Landforms Module. In this unit students begin to look at ways to represent the features of Earth’s surface at smaller scales. First, they work in three dimensions by creating desktop models of their schoolyard. They learn to transfer the features in their models to to a two-dimensional map. Along the way, they learn that symbols can represent landforms, structures, and other features of an area.

Students will continue their study of landforms by investigating the effects of water running over Earth’s surface and taking a closer look at the Grand Canyon. As they observe the effects of water running over solid earth material, we will learn new landforms and vocabulary. Students design and set up investigations to study how changes made by people affect the processes of erosion, deposition, and stream flow.

Important Vocabulary and ideas for this unit include:

*Vocabulary is spread out over five different investigations so don’t get overwhelmed!

Model - a representation of an object or process.

Boundary - The limit or border of an area or region.

Structure - Something built by people, like a building.

Map - A drawing of an area, usually as though you were looking straight down on it.

Cartographer - A person who makes maps.

Grid - A network of vertical and horizontal lines that form squares.

Symbol - A color, shape or texture used to represent something else on a map, such as a building, road, or landform.

Key - An explanation of symbols used on a map.

Drainage basin - A system of rivers and streams that drains an area like the Colorado Plateau.

Erosion - Wears away earth materials by water, wind, or ice.

Landform - A shape or feature of the earth’s surface, like a delta or canyon.

Canyon - V-shaped valley eroded by a river or stream.

Delta - Fan-shaped (triangular) deposit of earth materials at a mouth of a stream.

Plateau - A large, nearly level area that has been lifted above the surrounding area.

Slope - The angle or slant of a stream channel or land surface.

Alluvial fan - A fan-shaped landform deposited at the end of a steep canyon where the slope becomes flatter. Fans are usually found in arid regions.

Flood - A very heavy flow of water, which is greater than the normal flow of water and goes over the stream’s normal channel.

Flash flood - This type of flood rises and falls rapidly with little or no advance warning, usually as the result of very heavy rainfall over a relatively small area. Flash flood can be cause by sudden heavy rainfall, dam failure, or the thaw of an ice jam.

Levee - An embankment along a stream that protects land from flooding. Levees can be natural or constructed.

Dam - A construction or wall across a river that holds back the water flowing through the river, creating a reservoir or lake.

Floodplain - The area around a river that is covered by water flowing over the riverbank during a flood.

Base - Bottom of a mountain.

Contour line - A line on a topographic map that connects points of equal elevation.

Contour interval - The difference in elevation between contour lines.

Elevation - Vertical distance, or height, above sea level.

Peak - The highest point of a mountain.

Sea level - The average height of the ocean’s surface, zero elevation.

Topographic map - Uses contour lines to show the shape and elevation of the land’s surface.

Profile - A side view or cross-section of a landform such as a mountain.

Bench mark - A surveyor’s marker usually placed permanently in the group at a known position and elevation.

Intermittent stream - A stream that has water flowing in it only during certain times of the year.

Perennial stream - A stream that always has water flowing in it.

Ridge - A narrow area of high land between two valleys.

Glacier - A large mass or body of moving ice.

Valley - A low area between higher areas through which a river or stream often flows.

To Interpret a map means to figure out the symbols, textures, colors, and patterns to put together an image of the land covered by the map.

Aerial photograph - A photograph of the earth’s surface taken from an airplane or spacecraft flying above the earth.

Scale - describes the ratio between measured distance on a mape to the actual distance in the real world.

Surveyor - Measures and marks the distance, elevation position, and boundaries of land areas.

Bar scale - A ruler line on a topographic map that shows the scale.

Representative fraction - tells the scale of a map as a ratio between distance on a map to distance in the real world.

Rapids - A part of a river channel where the water moves rapidly over obstacles such as large boulders. This is a landform on the Colorado river in the Grand Canyon.

Intermittent lake - Contains water only during certain times of the year, such as the rainy season. This is a landform in the Death Valley.

Home to School

You can extend your child’s experiences in the classroom in a number of ways. Take trips to nearby parks that feature landforms common to your region. Watch the erosion and deposition that take place during and after a rainstorm. Visit your local library and check out books that include information about the local landscape. Have your child help you plan the route and destination for your next family vacation, keeping in mind interesting and unusual landforms you could encounter along the road. If you have any questions or comments please email or call me at school!

Weekend Problem Solving

Please answer the following problems in your math notebooks!

Remember:

  • Use your RUBRIC
  • Use math manipulatives to help you
  • Do your work individually, but you can ask a friend or friends for help
  • Remember to show all of your work and DEFEND your answer!

John’s been stranded on a desert island for six months. Fortunately for him, food keeps washing up on shore. A box with 100 bagels washed up first. Half as many apples washed up after that. A shipment of fried chicken appeared the next day. There were ¼ as many apples as pieces of fried chicken. How many pieces of fried chicken did John get?

Landforms Title Page

Make a title page in your lab notebook for our new unit. The title page needs to include:

1. The word “Landforms”

2. A picture that comes to mind when you think of Landforms (a mountain, volcano, maps...)

3. Should be in color

Reconciliation

On Friday, March 9th, our class will be going to confession with Father Johnson. We will be practicing in class, but I would like each child to practice at home at least twice to refresh their memories and feel prepared. This is a reflective time for your child that will help them prepare for Lent. I very much appreciate your help!

Steps for Reconciliation are……

1.Think about your sins and pray before Reconciliation. Remembering always that God loves us, we look at our lives and ask ourselves question like these:

  • When I make choices, have I done what God wants?
  • Did I pray at Mass each Sunday?
  • Have I used the name of God or Jesus in a bad way?
  • Have I been angry or cruel to others?
  • Have I forgotten to respect my body and those of others?
  • Have I taken anything that is not mine or treated others unfairly?
  • Have I always told the truth?
  • Have I hurt someone by what i have said or done?
  • Have I been jealous of others?
  • Have I refused to help people who are in need? Have I been selfish?
  • Have I shown respect to my parents

2. Father welcomes you and you make the sign of the cross with him.

3. You say, “Bless me Father for I have sinned, it has been ___ months since my last confession.”

4. You say “These are my sins……….” (You tell Father your sins and say that you are sorry about them.)

5. Father gives you a penance to do. You say Act of Contrition.

My God, I am sorry for my sins with all my heart. In choosing to do wrong and failing to do good, I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more, and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In his name, my God, have mercy.

6. Father absolves you of your sins. You sins are erased, and God forgives you.

7. Father will say a closing prayer. Father says, “Give thanks to the Lord for he is good.” You say “His mercy endures forever”.

8. You go back to the pew, kneel down and say the penance that Father gave you.
